Introduction

In this web quest you will learn more about the history of the Kiel ranch. The ranch has been many different things in its long history- Mormon Indian farm, murder crime scene, dude ranch and home to one of Las Vegas's founding fathers. Unfortunately the ravages of time, neglect and public apathy have taken its toll on Kiel as many of the Ranch's buildings have been destroyed, one of Nevada's oldest structures "the adobe" is near collapse and ruin. 

Essential Question: How has Kiel Ranch played a significant role in the development of Las Vegas?

The Task

The goal of this activity is for you to gain an appreciation of one of Las Vegas's oldest historic sites, the importance of preserving this historic site and a deeper understanding and appreciation of Las Vegas's history. In addition to learning about Kiel Ranch you will also have an opportunity to work with both primary and secondary sources.

The Process

As you navigate the webquest you will find documents and images concerning Kiel Ranch answer the questions in blue they will be  numbered sequentially. You can either write your questions and answers down or cut and paste the questions into a word processing document.  

 

As you navigate through the webquest you will have the opportunity to learn about Kiel Ranch by examining websites, books, newspapers, photographs, letters and various other primary source documents. As you investigate the various documents make sure you write down your answers.

Evaluation


 

You will be assessed upon how well you are able to interpret the documents contained in this webquest and your responses to the various questions.

 

In addition your teacher may require a longer response essay or presentation at their discretion.
